Silesia, Silesian Voivodeship or its Polish name województwo śląskie, located in the southern part of Poland. The region borders the provinces: Opole, Łódzkie, Świętokrzyskie and Małopolskie and borders with the Czech and the Slovak Republic to the south. Within 600 km from Katowice, there are six major European cities: Warsaw, Prague, Bratislava, Vienna, Budapest and Berlin.

There are 46 border crossings: 32 with the Czech Republic, including 29 road crossings, 6 of which are freight and 3 crossings and 14 with the Slovak Republic, including 13 road crossings, 4 of which service freight and rail junction, as well as the "Katowice" International Airport.

Almost 79% of the population lives in the region 71 towns and 2,100 villages. The Śląskie region 14 is in Poland in terms of area and 2 in relation to the total population per region. In this relatively small area, covering 12,300 square kilometers, 3.9% of Poland's territory, there are 4,900,000 inhabitants, 12.3% of the total population of the country, making it the highest population density in Poland at 382 persons / km2 compared 122 persons / km2 for Poland and 116 people / km2 in the EU.

The Silesian Voivodeship is divided into 36 districts (powiats). These include 19 districts, which are far more than any other province, and 17 counties. The districts are further divided into 167 gminas.
